AYURVEDIC ABHYANGA

Abhyanga provides the means for trans-dermal absorption of the healing qualities of the material used in the massage, and it helps the skin, which is the largest organ in the body, perform its diverse functions efficiently, whether it is allowing toxins to be released from the body or nourishment to be absorbed by the tissues. It is like oiling the engine of your car — if you do it regularly, your engine will be in peak condition, and give you years and years of trouble-free performance.

The ayurvedic massage is traditionally performed in the morning, before your bath or shower, to facilitate the release of toxins that may have accumulated during the previous night. You can use cured sesame oil, an herbalized massage oil, or an aroma massage oil. Maharishi Ayurveda offers them all.

Padhabhyanga

Padhabhyanga includes massage of the feet. Feet are very important part in our body, as many nerves from many organs terminate in the feet. So massage helps to strengthen these nerves and restores health to many parts of the body.

Foot massage is called "Padhabhyanga", and it has a very special place within the Ayurvedic tradition.

India is a country of great diversity. The many dialects and melding of religious practices have impacted upon the techniques and words that are used within Ayurvedic practice.

Shirodhara

Shiro means head and dhara is a steady flow of warm ayurvedic oil which is specially selected by the ayurvedic doctor. Dhara can also be done with other ingredients like buttermilk, but they are specifically chosen as per the condition. Shirodhara involves a continuous stream of oil that is gently swayed on the forehead which completely relaxes the nervous system and calms the mind.

Shirodhara has been used to treat a variety of conditions including eye diseases, sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, greying of hair, neurological disorders, memory loss, insomnia, hearing impairment, tinnitus, vertigo, Ménière's disease and certain types of skin diseases like psoriasis. It is also used non-medicinally at spas for its relaxing properties.

Ellakizhi

Ellakizhi is an Finely chopped herbal leaves and herbal powders are warmed in medicated oil and bundled in a poultice which is used for the fomentation massage. In cases of rheumatism and other diseases, fomentation in the affected area brings great relief. Ellakizhi promotes better circulation, relieves stress, and treats osteo-arthritis. It is also ministered to those with spondylosis and sports injuries resulting from soft tissue inflammations and joint pains.

Herbal poultices (bundles) are prepared with various herbs and medicated powders. The poultices are warmed in medicated oils and used to massage the entire body, neck, shoulders, hand and back, shifting the person from side to side. The massage can promote better circulation within the affected area thereby promoting increased perspiration, which helps the skin to eliminate wastes. It also helps to tone the skin and can be superbly relaxing

Choorna swedam

Choornaswedam is a traditional Balinese therapy employing the application of warm herbal poultices in order to induce the body to exude profusely. Through the application of these healing bundles and complementary touch therapies, those suffering from arthritis, neurological disorders, aches, sprains and rheumatism should experience a welcome relief.

A linen bag filled with churna (medicated powder) is used for fomentation, the duration of which varies according to disease conditions. This is effective for ailments due to Vata and Kapha disorders as it produces a therapeutic sweat, which relieves neurological disorders, rheumatism and arthritis.

NETHRA THARPANAM

Thalam

Thalam is the Malayalam name for the treatment procedure of retaining medicines over the center of the head using the help of a tailor-made cap. It is considered to be a shorter and easier version of Shirolepa and in the ancient days it was a treatment prescribed for mental illness. Now it has been re-designed as a mode of treatment for the conditions arising out of modern day life style diseases; Lack of memory, lack of willpower, lack of concentration, etc.

Special ayurvedic oils are mixed with herbal powders are maintained at the top of the head for about 20 to 45 minutes. Usually before any external treatment Thalam is performed.

PICHU

Pichu is a palliative treatment for ailments of the head and spine. During this treatment, a long, thick layer of cotton wool soaked with warm medicated oil is applied over the affected area. The oil is replaced periodically to keep it warm and therapeutic. Pichu, one of the Purvakarma therapies, is considered an effective treatment for diseases of the cranial nerves arising from Vata disorder. This therapy is very effective for degenerative and painful spinal problems.

Ksheera dhooma 

Ksheera dhooma is a traditional Kerala Ayurvedic treatment meant for disorders of facial nerve and different neurological disorders of facial muscles. This is very important in treating facial palsy.

Ksheera dhooma is a measure of swedan (fomentation). Safety measures need to observed for the safe administration of steam to the affected area. Medicated oil is applied to the area before steam is applied.Ksheeradhooma is unique to Kerala method of Ayurveda. Other possible spellings for ksheeradhooma can be ksheera dhooma, ksheeradooma, ksheera dooma, ksheeradhuma, ksheera dhuma, etc.

Vasti

Kati vasti is one of the treatment therapies of panchakarma in which medicated herbal oil is used for to carry out the process and is very useful in many health conditions.

PIZHICHIL

'Pizhi' means 'Squeezing' and 'Chil' means 'Vigorous movement.' It is a procedure of squeezing large quantities of warm medicated oil all over the body with one hand and massaging with the other hand. When administered many times in succession is found to alleviate pains and is very invigorating. This is a unique contribution of Kerala. It has also been proved to be highly effective on its own for treating diseases caused due to vitiation of the Vata humour, especially hemiplegia, paralysis, muscle spasms and other degenerative diseases affecting the muscles. This massage protects you from illnesses and builds up your immunity for a healthy life. It is very useful for rheumatic diseases, sexual weakness, blood pressure, nerve weakness and helps to arrest the ageing process.

Nasya

Nasya and Shirovirechana are terms that are used interchangeably. This procedure is a part of Panchakarma main elimination procedures (see Panchakarma, Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Rakta mokshana) but can be applied separately if indicated.

Nasya introduces medicated oils and powders into the nose, the nearest access and outlet to the organs of the head. It removes toxins and ama from the nose, larynx, mouth, sinuses, ears and eyes (see Toxic ama – the root of all diseases).

NAVARAKIZHI/SHASTIKA SHALI PINDA SWEDA

AVAGAHA SWEDAM

Avagaha Sweda is a kind of immersion bath where the patient is made to sweat while sitting in a tub filled with a specific warm medical decoction for the whole body or different parts of the body like the hips or feet. This is good for rheumatism, painful urination, hernia, lower backache, arthritis, etc.

Sweda is performed independently, too, to treat the ailments of asthma, catarrh and loss of voice. Avagaha Sweda is one variation of sweda. In this, the patient is made to sweat while sitting in a tub filled with a medicinal decoction.
